Tokyo retains title as Michelin’s gourmet capital

TOKYO, Nov 29 ? Tokyo retained the title of the world’s gourmet capital today, when the Michelin guide awarded it more stars than any other city for the fifth year in a row. Tokyo restaurants also won more top awards than last year with 16 given the three-star rating, which Michelin defines as “exceptional cuisine, worth a special journey”. That … Continue reading

Bistro à Table, PJ

The chef, Isadora Chai was being interviewed on radio regarding her playground, this bistro, when a friend heard it. She creates adaptive French cuisine by incorporating local elements to modern French food. It was the brilliant use of ice cream in french onion soup that highly appealed to us, and we found ourselves at the doorsteps of Bistro à Table, after braving Friday night traffic. Situated at the unlikely corner of shoplots in a quieter area of Section 17, parking is a breeze. The interior is simple but cozy and the dangling lights centerpiece has garnered much interest. But what I liked was probably the drapes that partitioned some tables on the left to give the diners some privacy. Yet I realised I didn’t take a shot of it, haha. Alas, the menu is one that’s dependent to the current availability of ingredients as well and the french onion soup has outlasted its fifteen minutes of fame. along with the mains and dessert i had in mind too. haha. but well, new items on the menu to try then! Started with the warm bread… We then had Irish Oysters with Yuzu Dressing (RM48). The distinctive sharp citrus note of the yuzu fruit with the fresh oyster was indeed a match made in heaven. I have always remembered Kataifi in sweet variants but lately I have been seeing it featured in dim sum joints with avocado cream filling or even prawn with mango etc. Here at Table, they have come up with Kataifi-wrapped chevre with beet puree (RM28). The kataifi parcel itself I am somewhat impartial to as I tasted more pastry than cheese but i loved the beet puree. Smooth and earthy to taste. Since I have heard and read so much about the Coddled maple syrup egg with crouton dust & Fleur de Sel (RM16), had to order it and try. Deceptively simple in looks, the soft boiled egg is in fact brimming with the unusual flavour of the runny yolk, maple syrup and crouton dust. Interesting textures and aftertaste. Their signature main is the Canelloni of seared scallops & school prawns, served with lobster bisque and Indonesian black nut tapenade (RM62). The canelloni looks promising but I found it a tad bland by itself. But the full flavours of the lobster bisque when coupled with the canelloni, creates a more enjoyable experience. But the most intriguing bit for me was probably the buah keluak tapenade. I personally love buah keluak due to its nutty, oily taste that one has to try to understand. Can’t wait to get my hands on some to try to make my own tapenade. Yum! This is the 8 Hour Duck confit with candied kumquats and puy lentils (RM59). The glistening skin of the duck thigh looked so inviting! Duck confit is actually short cured duck thigh which is then slow cooked in its own fat for the tender, fall-of-the-bones flesh. I had the Stuffed cured quail with cassis jus (RM68). It was served atop pea mash with a side of beet & ginger, cranberries and truffled mash. As it was a cured quail, it was a tad saltier but once mixed with the jus and mash, it does blend nicely and takes the saltiness down a notch. The truffled mash and pea mash was particularly memorable. It was easily the best mains of the night. I personally had high hopes for the desserts especially the “finale” of the night after the promising description in the print out that was handed to us earlier. We somehow ended up starting our dessert run with the Chocolate mousse with Milo and hazelnut praline (RM18). It was just that. Smooth chocolate mousse with slightly crunchy but overpowering Milo & hazelnut praline. We could barely remember the mousse as the taste of Milo is so dominant. I do love my Milo, but I can have Milo Dinosaur at a mamak for a fraction of the price. Thumbs up for presentation though. Loved the chocolate leaves. The earlier mentioned “finale” was this, the Ode to Newton (RM36). I didn’t make any association with apples as the Chef thought we would. But then, it was printed out clearly in the printout that it would be a matter of gravity vs anti gravity. We were probably all waiting for this really elaborate dessert that combined both the soufflé and ice-cream in one so I for one was a tad surprised when we were served 2 separate desserts. The soufflé represents the anti-gravity which if eaten at the correct speed would see the lemongrass ice hemisphere melt enough to have the cinnamon & nutmeg ice cream plop into the warm ginger beer i.e. gravity. maybe a bit too much physics involved for some, but just think, 2 desserts. Lol. The incredibly light, fluffy soufflé was probably the best I have had in a long time. So airy that it does defy gravity. Cracking it and pouring in the creme anglaise brought the little satisfaction that one gets when cracking the perfect sugar coat of a creme brulee. It must have been so good coz we finished the soufflé way before the ice-cream dropped. Then as we were chatting away, the ice-cream dropped. And I must admit the sight of the melting ice-cream in the ginger beer was a tad unsightly and reminded me of something that is never meant to be discussed over dinner. Heh. Our dinner came up to almost RM500 that night which is a pretty penny for dinner. Though there was some that wowed and some that didn’t, i believe what keeps Malaysians coming is the fact that the menu changes according to what’s the best and freshest in the current market. I am especially piqued by Degustation nights but haven’t seen reason to justify the whopping RM330-450+ price tag yet. Until then, keeping an eye on the changing menu… Bistro à Table ( www / fb ) No.6, Jalan 17/54, 46400 Petaling Jaya, Selangor Tel:03-7931 2831 or 014 338 5888 Open : Dinner Tues-Sun. New Shanghai, Pavilion KL

It was a girls’ afternoon tea session. One of them was keen for us to try New Shanghai due to this memorable cake that she had. As it was a weekend, the shop was packed and we had to wait for a while before we managed to get seats. I quite like the decor of the shop. They have indeed tried to bring in a Shanghainese feel to it. We were seated at the armchairs and the tables were a bit too small and low to truly enjoy the food. But to sink in and sip at tea while catching up? Perfect. They have a corner where the cooked snacks are rolled out for patrons to buy for takeaway or dine in. Only certain dim sum items are cooked upon order. Turns out the cake was this Osmanthus Cake (???) at RM4.80. Brimming with wolfberries more than Osmanthus flowers, it was too sweet for my liking. But it was fragrant, so those with a sweet tooth will definitely enjoy it. We also had Fried Yam (????) at RM2.80 each and pan fried Lotus Root Pancake (?????) at RM3.80. Both were pretty tasty but would have tasted even better if it was served fresh off the wok or piping hot. The fried yam lacked the flakiness I hoped for though. But the lotus root pancake more than made up for my disappointment in the fried yam. The Shanghai Pancake (?????) and Homemade Fishcake (?????) at RM3.80 each were flavourful and well seasoned. The Sesame Ball Teochew Style (?????) at RM2.80 each was generously filled. None of the steamed buns we had truly appealed to me. And we tried 3 types, Yam Bun (???), Pumpkin Bun (?????) and BBQ Chicken Bun (?????) at RM2.80 each. Cold buns another no go for me. So the best item we had was the Siew Mai (????) at RM8.80 as it was freshly steamed. So yummy that it didn’t even matter that it was pork free! Overall, the food here is good though I truly wish for it to be at the right temperature for those who opt to dine in. Maybe I should just do as the masses do, dapao (some more get cute paper bag!) and reheat at home before eating. Heh. TTDI Ramadhan Bazaar 2011

Ramadhan is nearing its end and I haven’t been inspired to visit any bazaars until last weekend. Roped in a friend and headed for one of the nearest ones to her, at TTDI. We were quite lucky to get parking as soon as we arrived. I feel the market is smaller this round, maybe because it’s been shifted to span across one street instead of last year’s L shape stretch. Still, the crowd was impressive. Colourful drinks calling out to passerbys. Sup Gearbox stall. Various lauk and kuih . Nasi with ayam goreng berempah and Nasi Ambeng stall. The fried chicken looks really tasty and juicy… My usual choice at the bazaar is Nasi Kerabu , and this time I had it with salted egg and bergedil . The rice is a bit clumpy but otherwise not too bad. Pandan flavoured Putu Bambu . This stall has them in a green shade, which I hope is due to the pandanus leave, or probably colouring. Haha. This stall seems to do well and even has pre-packed ones so waiting time is cut down. Satar , my favourite cone-shaped Terengganu snack is also available here. The guys manning the stall said they’re from Selayang, hence the name. We did buy some to try and tastewise, it was not too bad, thought a bit on the sweet side. 3 pieces for RM2. This popiah basah stall was one of them doing brisk business so I expect it’s quite popular with those thronging this bazaar. King of murtabaks . Haha. Putu piring stall next to the grilled lamb stall. The putu piring stall is a regular I think, coz they were here last year too. I watched the boy behind the stall make the putu piring and was rather impressed with his deft fingers going at it. There’s also another grilled lamb stall in the bazaar but I think this was the original one from last year, selling the roti arab. Various laksas and noodles. Chicken kebab meat roasting. Looks promising, eh? Ikan Bakar station. Ayam Bakar . Yummy cucur udang (prawn fritters) at RM2 for 3 pieces. ABC Power! A bread & butter pudding stall. They have come up with many creative flavours at RM 1.80 per slice. I went for the original and almond with peanut butter. I thought it was too milky and even the custard sauce didn’t really help. But still, the creativity in flavours was a plus. I didn’t really buy too much stuff to try in comparison to previous years so this post is mostly pictures only. Hope you guys enjoyed it. Lol. The Hungry Hog, Subang SS15

I first learnt of Hungry Hog when a friend told us she bought Siew Yoke off a blogshop for our pot luck dinner that night. The crispy pork in the old school brown paper packaging coupled with the wonderful lime chilli condiment was the main discussion over dinner that night. So when I got word that a cafe by the people behind Hungry Hog was opening in SS15, had to arrange for a visit with some porky lovers. The design of the cafe itself is simple, yet cosy. I personally loved the framed “words of wisdom” on the walls. Sure added a bit of humour to the dining experience. They are starting off with a simple menu but I am quite happy with the items offered. Their signature is of course their Siew Yoke so we had to order a serving of their Siew Yoke Rice. The roast pork itself can also be ordered ala carta as a snack. But what we liked about the rice set was the fact that they had a little pickled carrots on the side to whet your appetite and the rice was topped with braised pork bits reminding one of Taiwan’s rice dish, ?????. Phad Kao Muu, another rice based dish with minced pork and basil. I love the hint of spiciness the chillies give. If I had my way, would love more basil in these for that lovely aroma. They offer 2 types of burgers, the Plain Jane and 3 Little Pigs. The names are genius. The recommended burger is the 3 Little Pigs which feature their own pork patty, crispy bacon and ham. The bun is baked by the chefs themselves and is quite light. My only gripe is perhaps the choice of ham used. For that, I prefer the Plain Jane which features the tender pork patty and cheese only. Our favourite of the night was definitely the luscious ribs in char siew sauce. Served with a tropical salad featuring fresh pineapples, the tender, juicy meat was finger licking good. Chunky cuts, generous marinade maketh the dish indeed. For those who want something other than pork, there’s the Guinness Beef Stew as well. The portion is quite substantial but some of the beef cubes were drier than others. But still overall very hearty and brimming with the flavour of the dark stout. We also had sausages, with fennel I believe, but it came whilst we were all happily tucking in to the rest of the dishes so we kinda missed out on snapping a shot. But they were great, tasty meat with little filler. The only have one dessert at the moment, brownies served with ice cream which I skipped. Coffee was a bit weak, in my opinion so opt for other drinks. But overall, good unpretentious food. I’m glad I work nearby so I can pop by whenever for lunch as they also offer lunch sets with drinks. Oink! Samovar Restaurant, Solaris

Ever since group discount websites took the internet by storm, I too have been trying out new places courtesy of these discounts, rarely food deals though coz of one bad experience. This particular deal caught my eye simply because it’s offering “Authentic Russian Cuisine”. The menu looked pretty palatable, not as foreign as I would think. So my friend and I headed off to Solaris looking for this place. The location is a tad hidden to me as I am rarely found in Solaris. The place was rather empty as it was on a weekday night. They even offer free karaoke which was luckily not being utilised. Haha. Run by a friendly Russian couple from Sochi at the Black Sea region of Russia, Russian food is not the only choice here. They also serve Middle Eastern (that explains the shisha!), Western and even Malaysian fare (hmmm). Included was this Borscht Soup, a vegetable soup with cabbage, beetroot, carrots, potatoes served with bread. We were a bit surprised that the bread served was our normal white Gardenia bread only. The soup itself is very light, not as hearty as I expected. But the more you drink, the nicer it tastes. But still, it lacks a certain oomph. The Olivie Salad with potatoes, chicken, egg, cucumber and mayonnaise reminds me of this potato salad recipe I used to make. But without the frozen vegetable medley (peas, diced carrots etc) so in some way this tasted like comfort food to me. They have other salad options though most of it seemed to use pickled vegetables so I feel that’s probably too adventurous for some’s palate. This was not part of the deal, but ordered the hummus with meat just to try. The hummus was very smooth and I think we enjoyed it with the bread even though for the umpteenth time I wish another bread type was offered. We got to choose one main course with the voucher and I opted for the Pelmeni – dumplings with minced chicken & mushrooms. Apparently “pelmeni” means ear-shaped bread and the process of making them were once labour-intensive. But now like our curry puffs, there are moulds that help with the making of the dumplings. But irregardless of how it was made, the dumplings were quite yummy. The ground meat was juicy, flavourful and I really liked this. Topped with melted butter,it was served with a type of tomato puree which is like tapenede in consistency. I found that quite interesting as it added a different dimension to the overall flavour. It does remind me of gyoza or even chinese guo tie but the seasoning used is definitely different as the taste is anything but. Another main course that we chose was Katletti , chicken cutlets with butter, cheese & rice. The plain rice is not so plain afterall, as I believe it was cooked in some broth as it had some flavour to it. The katletti which resembles croquettes is deep fried and bursting with flavour. The owners are really friendly though we could only communicate in limited English. He even gave us a discount on the hummus which wasn’t included in the voucher! I don’t mind coming back for more of the dumplings and trying some other Russian fare as it feels quite homecooked. But considering the area it’s based in, with so many other restaurants as its competition, I can see why it’s so quiet despite the decent food. And if you’re inclined, feel free to bring your own alcohol as they don’t charge corkage. Samovar Restaurant K-01-08, SoHo KL, No. 2, Jalan Solaris, Mont Kiara, 50480 Kuala Lumpur. Sumi-ka Yakitori @ SS15 Subang Jaya

With so many commitments and demands of my time lately, food hunting is now a luxury. Therefore I do look forward to the precious few moments where I can actually go out to town and enjoy a good meal. (So it really does piss me off when I get to go out for dinner to try a new place and get served crap food, which unfortunately happens one time to many lately, with a few of the new-er cafe style places in Penang!) But amongst the haystack of mediocre lacklustre places, shines a brilliant diamond in the rough – Sumi-ka Yakitori! (unfortunately, it’s not located in Penang, but in SS15 Subang Jaya) Nonetheless I just have to rave about this place. It’s an unassuming, blink-and-you’ll-miss it kinda place. In fact I don’t really know how to get there myself (but there are some directions and the address at the end of this post). The black sign board of Sumi-ka overshadowed by the big,  bright White Bubble Dobi sign. Sumi-ka is not new, but it definitely has a loyal following judging from the labelled bottles of wine and sake along the wall… Sumi-ka is not a big place. Tables are limited and they serve a small but varied grilled menu. The Japanese big boss himself helms the grill and is a jolly and loud character. Every now and then, you’ll hear an energetic chorus of ‘HAI!’ (Yes in Japanese) from the staff, in response to something their boss shouts in Japanese. The staff are efficient and quick. They pick up succulent sticks of meat from the grill and serves them in a flash. The menu is a simple two page menu – no photos. Just a list of different meats and vegetables for you to choose from. First you get serve a bowl of cabbage salad that’s free flow (just some fibre to balance up all that charcoal grilled meats later on.. hehe) Okay.. here goes… photos galore! Salmon and Mushrooms (which had a lovely delicate smoky flavour, slightly crisp on the outside, juicy on the inside!) Squids (no rubbery squids here, yay~) and Quail Egg Meatballs coated with a sweet sauce My absolute favourite meat on a stick here at Sumi-ka – the Miso Beef Ribs… tender flavourful meat.. one stick is simply not enough! (though your wallet may protest a lil cos its about RM9 a stick?) Grilled sweet potato – buttery and sweet, another must try! Be careful not to burn yourself while opening up the foil though! Grilled prawns – these come in S, M, L size. lol I think we had the M. Onigiri Continue reading
